Fishing rules 2026

Welcome to fishing in the Beiarelva!

Fishing for Atlantic salmon and sea trout is permitted in the parts of the Beiarn watercourse affiliated with Beiarelva SA. At the fish ladders in Tollåga and Høgforsen, protected zones extend 50 meters downstream from the ladders. In Tollåga, fishing is also prohibited on the anadromous stretch upstream of the fish ladder.

Seasonal Quotas and Minimum Size Limits

Atlantic Salmon

Daily quota:
3 salmon per angler, of which only one salmon under 65 cm may be retained.

Season quota:
4 salmon under 65 cm per angler.

All salmon over 65 cm must be released.

Minimum size:
40 cm

All injured or killed salmon over 65 cm and below the minimum size of 40 cm must be reported and handed over to the landowner, and also registered in the catch reporting system.

Confirmed escaped farmed salmon may be killed throughout the season regardless of quotas.

Farmed salmon that has not been verified by an approved fishing permit vendor shall count toward the quota.

Only permit vendors, or persons designated by Beiarelva SA, may determine whether a fish is confirmed farmed salmon.

Verified farmed salmon does not count toward the quota and may be kept by the angler after inspection.

Fish incorrectly identified as farmed salmon must be handed over to the landowner/fishing permit vendor.

Sea Trout

Daily quota:
3 sea trout under 65 cm

Season quota:
10 sea trout under 65 cm per angler

Minimum size:
40 cm

All sea trout over 65 cm and under 40 cm must be released.

All injured or killed sea trout below the minimum size must be reported and handed over to the landowner, and also registered in the catch reporting system.

Bait and Fishing Gear Rules

  • Fishing gear with a maximum of one treble hook is permitted.
  • When practicing catch and release, the use of barbless hooks is recommended.
  • The use of small but strong hooks with small barbs is encouraged, as this may reduce injury to fish.
  • Worm fishing is permitted.
  • Each angler may fish with only one rod, and the rod must not be left unattended while fishing.
  • The use of electronic fish-finding equipment is prohibited.
  • The use of gaffs is prohibited.
  • Fly fishing with added weight/sinker is prohibited.
  • When fishing with fly and float, the casting weight must consist of a floating float.

Amendments to the Rules for Beiarelva

  1. Purchasing multiple fishing permits in one’s own or another person’s name for the same zone on the same day is considered illegal.
  2. Subletting or resale of fishing permits is considered illegal unless covered by agreements made with the landowner before the start of the season.

Other Fishing Rules

  • Proof of payment of the national fishing fee must be presented to the permit vendor when purchasing a fishing permit and during disinfection procedures.
  • All equipment, including boots and waders, must be disinfected before permission to fish in Beiarelva and its salmon-bearing tributaries is granted, regardless of where the equipment was last used.
  • This requirement also applies to canoes, boats, packrafts, or any other equipment used in the river.
  • Disinfection certificates from other rivers are not valid in the Beiar watercourse.
  • Downstream mobile fishing is mandatory.
  • Both retained and released fish must be recorded on the permit and reported within 24 hours.
  • “Zero catch” reports are mandatory.
  • All injured fish that are consequently killed and exceed the maximum size limit or fall below the minimum size limit must immediately be reported by SMS to the permit vendor at the designated phone number.
  • The fish must be presented and handed over to the landowner/permit vendor.
  • Scale samples must be taken from all killed salmon and escaped farmed salmon.
  • Fish released back into the river must be handled as carefully as possible to avoid mortality and must never be lifted out of the water.
  • All anglers must carry long-nose pliers for hook removal and have access to a knotless landing net.
  • Marking the fishing rod at 65 cm is recommended.
  • Serious violations of the regulations may be reported to the salmon office. See attached document regarding consequences of rule violations.
  • Fishing from floating vessels such as canoes, boats, or packrafts is prohibited.
